Judges Special Award
WINNER: Annie Coates
Annie came to New Zealand from her native Burma in 1983 and 7 years ago was thrust into a new role that she had never expected.
She inherited the Golden Lotus, a Thai restaurant in Wellington's Brooklyn, when the owner was forced to return to Thailand for personal reasons. Since then Annie has run the Golden Lotus because she sees it as an opportunity to train and mentor young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
Dozens of migrants have started out under her watchful eye, learning how to wait on tables, prepare food or work in the kitchen. They have gone on to other jobs as a result of the work experience they have gained. Others worked for her in order to pay their university course fees and so were able to avoid crippling debt due to her support. Annie is nana, aunty and mum to hundreds.
